Ukraine, a top recruitment destination for world’s top universities
More than 80% of Ukrainian postgraduate degree applicants wish to study in Europe, compared to just 17.2% in the US, results released this week show.
QS TopGradschool.com Masters and PhD Applicants Survey 2010 report found the majority (81%) of Ukrainian postgraduate degree applicants wish to study close to home – a trend that will see a significant number of UK and other countries’ universities come to Kiev this fall in order to recruit candidates.
Some UK and the world’s top universities from North America, Asia, and Australasia, will be in Kiev as part of the QS World Grad School Tour on Monday 11th October. The Tour visits 56 cities in 36 different countries around the world each year – this is the fifth year it will travel to Kiev.
The survey also showed that Ukrainian women in particular demonstrate great ambition and interest to study at international universities. In fact, 70% of candidates who registered and consequently attended the QS World Grad School Tour in 2009 were women, and organizers are predicting a similar trend this year.
One of the reasons why there are so many female candidates interested in post-graduate education abroad might be a growing number of scholarships specifically dedicated to women. IE in Spain is one of many universities returning to Kiev to recruit Ukrainian post-graduate students offering scholarships. Kim Goddard from the International Development Department for Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, CIS countries and the UK at IE said, ‘With regard to scholarships available to Ukrainian candidates, we offer the following: IE - QS Scholarships for Women, IE Fund Diversity Scholarship, Supporting Women Leaders Scholarships, Women in Business & Finance Scholarships, All Family Support Grants and the Growth Scholarships for Eastern European Nationals.
Furthermore, there are numerous other scholarships available depending on the programme of interest.’
Zoya Zaitseva, regional marketing director at QS, says the increased number of UK and other top higher education institutes from around the world attending the Kiev fair should be encouraging for Ukrainian students hoping to study there. It’s clear that these schools see Ukraine as a key destination for their overseas recruitment activities, making October the prime time for candidates wishing to start their Masters or PhD studies in 2011 to meet admissions directors of the leading universities. With the QS Scholarships on offer as well this is a really good opportunity for students to learn more about international programs, talk to the people who will be making the final decision regarding applications and meet fellow candidates.”
Applicants hoping to get an insight into studying at one of the world’s top universities such as Manchester Business School, Hult International Business School, Pepperdine University - School of Public Policy, IE Business School, ESADE, AUEB Athens University of Economics and Business and others can meet admissions officers at the QS World Grad School Tour in Kiev on Monday 11th October.
